Our Story:

Missouri River Youth Theatre is rooted in the joy of workig with YOUTH! Our staff has not so much found themselves bitten by the theatre bug as they have found themselves falling in love with young people who've been bitten by it.

After some earlier productions, which left many wonderful impressions of what it means to work with youth in theatre, and much encouragement from audience feedback, Missouri River Youth Theatre was brought about in order to expand the reach of our work with theatre to include the entire community.

Established as a non-profit organization in April of 2003, our first production as "Missouri River Youth Theatre" was brought to Historic Thespian Hall in November of 2003. A cast of 29 youth, ages 4-16, made the stage come alive with "Anne of Green Gables".
In June 2004 MRYT joined with the Lewis and Clark Discoverfest by presenting "Lewis and Clark: A Bicentennial of Discovery" with 22 youth, ages 6-17.
A double cast brought the original version of "Cheaper by the Dozen" to Thespian Hall in June of 2005, with each cast on stage at alternate performances. Twenty-six youth, ages 7-17 performed in this true story of the Gilbreth Family set in 1922.

Next, "would you believe?", we enjoyed a hilarious blast from the past with those two famous CONTROL agents, "Maxwell Smart" and "Agent 99" as they blundered their way through KAOS and stopped "Mr. Big" from taking over the world in "Get Smart" in November of 2005, a classic comedy by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry.

Some of our goals for youth include:

  • Providing wholesome alternatives for self expression and productivity.

  • Teaching the basics in theatre, exposing youth to acting and multifaceted aspects of theatrical production.

  • Building confidence and public speaking skills that will last a lifetime.

  • Unleashing creativity through acting, backstage assistance, and working to create and manage sets and props.

  • Offering the experience of theatre as a "team sport" that teaches the value of hard work, dependability, cooperation, and problem solving.

There is opportunity for all youth in the entire area to become involved in the various aspects of the theatre. All those under the age of 18 are welcome to come and be a part of workshops and try out for productions. We ask that children be old enough to get on and off stage happily and unaccompanied before they are enrolled in workshops or come to auditions.

MRYT will work with community youth groups who contact us with six months advance notice to plan a production as an educational experience for their group. You will find our contact information on the left side of this page.
